Read the manual and check for warnings
Use these steps only for a vehicle with a manual engine-oil dipstick; electronic gauges have their own procedure. Check the specified oil and measuring conditions. If an oil-pressure warning appears while the engine is running, stop safely, switch off and seek assistance. A normal oil level does not prove that oil pressure is safe.

2. Park safely and wait as specified

Switch the vehicle fully off, including a hybrid's READY mode. Follow the specified temperature and waiting time: some cars require a cold check, others a warm engine left to rest. Do not use a universal waiting time.
3. Locate the engine-oil dipstick

Instructional illustration generated with AI for Howmigo. Open and secure the bonnet as instructed. Identify the engine-oil dipstick using the manual rather than handle colour alone, and pull it out carefully. Keep clear of hot parts, belts, electrical connections and cooling fans, which can start even with the engine off.
4. Wipe and reinsert fully

Instructional illustration generated with AI for Howmigo. Wipe the dipstick with a clean lint-free cloth. Insert it fully into its own tube, then withdraw smoothly as the manual directs. Keep dirt out of the tube and avoid touching nearby components.
5. Read the oil level

Instructional illustration generated with AI for Howmigo. Hold the dipstick as the manual directs and inspect both sides against MIN and MAX. If smears make the reading unclear, wipe and repeat rather than guess. Do not add oil if the level is within the permitted range. Below MIN, no visible oil, milky oil, metal particles or a sudden drop needs attention before driving.
6. Refit or top up carefully

Instructional illustration generated with AI for Howmigo. If low and the manual permits it, add only the approved oil through the engine-oil filler in small amounts, using a clean funnel. Wait and recheck each time; never exceed MAX. Do not guess the quantity between marks. Wipe spills, refit the filler cap and dipstick, and secure the bonnet. If above MAX or unsure, obtain help before driving.
